The actress and baking goddess, 63, lives with her husband, illustrator Gerald Scarfe, in London’s Chelsea.

What’s your beauty routine?
In the evening, I start with Johnson’s wipes followed by Theraderm wash [from theskinservice.com], Clinique Naturally Gentle Eye Makeup Remover and whatever ''magic'' potion I’m currently trying.

Your make-up bag staples?
Mac foundation stick; Artistry concealer [from amway.co.uk] – the best in the world; Mac blusher, eyeshadow and liner.

Do you eat to live or live to eat?
I adore food and always have. The answer to good health, I believe, is not to think about it too much: I might live on marshmallows and Doritos one day, but eat nothing but grapes, nuts and sardines the next. I love cooking, though – I’d rather fling some fish under the grill than buy a ready meal.

What’s your signature scent?
Worth’s Je Reviens. It’s made in the traditional way, which means it doesn’t last long on the skin but, unlike many modern scents, it doesn’t have an unpleasant undertone.

Your desert island essentials?
Ultrasun suncream and, if there’s a chance of a Man Friday appearing, Lancôme Definicils mascara.

Your favourite designer?
For dressing up I love Jasper Conran.

Best boutique?
Sally Parsons in Bute Street, London SW7 always has loads of clothes I covet.

Do you take supplements?
Fish oils, if I remember…

Guilty pleasure?
I have to have a bag of Revels when I go to the cinema.

Who is your beauty icon?
For someone of my generation who looks wonderful without the wind-tunnel look, it has to be Catherine Deneuve.
